Objectives:

Networking Fundamentals for Linux Administrators

  • describe the main concepts of TCP/IP networking, recognize IP addresses and network masks, and describe the various TCP/IP protocols available.
  • demonstrate how to use simple commands for testing and investigating the network, describe how to conduct a Telnet session with a remote host and the use of alternative remote login utilities, recognize how to use FTP to transfer files, and do other tasks.
  • describe the principles underlying IP subnets and explain how to perform IP subnetting.
  • describe the Linux files used for configuring TCP/IP.
  • configure network interfaces using the ifconfig program.
  • view or configure the routing table.
  • monitor and troubleshoot a TCP/IP network using Linux tools.
  • set up PPP for use on a Linux system and use the pppd daemon.
  • use PPP to initiate, terminate, and troubleshoot PPP connections.
